IWSG 19 - As The Year Ends

Holy moly, it's the final month of 2017. It's hard to believe we are down to the final weeks of another year. Yet here we are, and this is my final #IWSG post of 2017.

Last month was a whirlwind. I attempted NaNo for the first time and I released my second book. I "failed" at NaNo. I only ended with around 20k in words, but that is 20k in new words. In hindsight doing a release in that same month was not the best idea, but it seemed like a great plan when the release date was picked.

That leads us right into this month's optional question.

As you look back on 2017, with all its successes/failures, if you could backtrack, what would you do differently?

Attempting NaNo while trying to manage a book release would be one thing I do differently. I really feel like the stress and worry that goes along with a book release kept me from being able to fully focus on NaNo in the way required for that undertaking. I would have still released my book in November as the date had meaning to the story, I would have decided against taking on NaNo.

Honestly, not sure I'll do it next year or not, I'm a slow writer. I don't follow the idea that "all first drafts are crap" so trying to put out words that I know won't be the best I can make them just to get words makes me feel icky.

I haven't done much else in 2017, as sad as that is. I've started a few other projects, but I'm a slow writer. That's something else I'd like to do differently, speed up my writing process. Not sure if that'll happen, but I'm trying. Also to be less wordy. That might help my speed, who knows.

That's it for this month. No new insecurities, just the same old ones I've talked about. New book out means new set of reviews to come in and that makes me nervous. I've read the beginning ones, but like with Fiendish, I know I'll have to stop reading for my own sake.

I have a positive outlook going into 2018. I have a few projects started so my chances for actually publishing again next year are looking good. That's a huge improvement over the three year gap I had last time.

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and happy New Year.

Until next time
~Meka

  1. Trying and failing is better than not trying at all. And 20,000 words is an excellent word count. Way to go!

    1. True. That's a good way to look at it. And I have 20k new words I didn't have before.

  2. HI--I'm new to IWSG, so it's great to meet you. I also write romance! Considering that you were releasing a book in November, I'd say you got quite a lot of writing done.

But I'm with you--I don't like "burping" the words out. I'd rather write slowly and well from the first draft, so there's less re-writing overall.

    Best wishes for 2018.

    1. Nice to meet you and welcome to IWSG! You'll love it here. NaNo and a book release is not something I think I'll do again, but never say never.

Yep. That's my feelings on writing as well. I am not a fan of the editing phase so I would like to minimize it as best I can.

  3. Rolling with things is much better if you ask me. Slow or not, write at your speed. :-)

    1. Yep. I can't speed it up. I've tried and it is not me. Need to stop fighting it I guess.

  4. Hey Meka,

I wouldn't look at it as "failing" NaNo. I'd look at it as being a success because it got you working on a new project. Good luck in 2018.

I'm sure joining the 365 Writing Club has motivated you to write every day.

    Keep smiling,

    1. Thanks Yawatta! I have a few projects that will now need my attention. Need to go on a hunt for my focus because it's been waning lately.

Joining 365 did help me, and I'm doing it again next year.

  5. 20k is an excellent start! I stacked nano with a revision, and hit about the same. I'm going to keep going with it, and it'll keep my mind busy while I'm querying later.

  6. 20k sounds like a winner to be when it was in conjunction with a book release. All the best for the new year - may it be full of joy, happiness and productivity.

    1. Thank you Ellen! I started out strong, but the focus and my attention to the words started to drop off.

Best wishes to you as well heading into 2018!

  7. I imagine that was a lot in one month. With preparing the book and promo, I think getting that many words was good. I've never participated in NaNo. I don't think I want to feel icky either. LOL

    1. Yes it was! Not sure what I was thinking when I decided to do both, but won't do it again. NaNo isn't for me. I can't write that fast and I need the words to be good ones otherwise I'm all thrown off.

      thanks for stopping by

  8. I agree that doing NaNo at the same time as a new book release was probably not a good idea. But, hey, you have 20k words you didn't have before. You say you're a slow writer. My only advice is to do what's best for you. Write at the pace you're comfortable with. You don't need that extra pressure. I hope 2018 is great.

    1. LOL you live and learn right? I do have 20k new words spread out between 2 projects. Hopefully at least one of them will be completed for 2018. Yep, I'm slow and proud. I can't put out multiple books a year, and I've had to learn to be okay with that and do things my way.

thanks for stopping by. Hope your 2018 is wonderful!

  9. Congrats on the releases of your second book and the new 20k words written during NaNoWriMo. 2018 sounds like it'll be a good year, so hope that'll actually be better than good. Happy writing, book releasing and holidays! :-D

    1. Thank you!!! I'm excited to have it completed and out there. 20k got me a decent start. I have a few projects that I'll try and complete next year. I hope you have a wonderful holiday and best wishes for 2018
