Music Monday - Mack The Knife

It's Monday! And yes, I know it's been a while since I've done a Music Monday post. Why? Well, because I have been trying to do songs that come up when I'm writing and I've not been doing a lot of that lately. But, this week I'm back.

I'm still not writing, soon (hopefully), so this is another special edition Music Monday. I've talked about this wonderful lady before, in fact shamefully on my part, the last Music Monday was to promote her upcoming release at that time for the debut of her novel Invisible Anna.

How fitting I kick off the reboot of Music Mondays with another release from her, because unlike me, she's been a writing machine! Coralie Moss' newest book, OPENING NIGHTS was put out in the world last week on July 26th. It's actually Ms. Moss' third book as she also has a novella out called Summer Nights.

Chase Witherell’s preferred milieu is any place but his family’s Beacon Hill mansion. Overseeing global projects keeps him where he wants to be—in the air and on the road. Touching down in Boston, he attends a fundraising gala where he’s smitten with the show’s lead costume designer. Could this stunning and talented single be the one who prompts him to unpack his bags?

For workaholic Luna O’Rourke, life revolves around the theater, where she’s just one production away from her dream job. That is, until the conniving actress, Fionna Marchess goes into overdrive to sabotage Luna’s promotion—and love life.

When the costumer’s meticulously scripted life falls apart, she must figure out whom to trust. Can Luna—who’s always worked from behind the curtains—step out and embrace the limelight with her leading man?

What Coralie had to say about the music selection for this novel:

I went down Memory Lane when writing Opening Nights. I had over a decade of behind-the-scenes and in-the-sewing-room memories to draw from, and this was one of those times where music really helped.

When I was working in my costume studio, where I had my machines and fabrics and racks of vintage clothes, I would blast Erasure, Radiohead, Florence and the Machine, and others. But, during part of my years in the theater I was going through a divorce and I would play…soulful music, which I couldn’t listen to when I was writing!

When it was fittings and rehearsal time at the theater, the music blasting through would either be what the set building crew wanted to hear or, if it was a musical, invariably there were be lots of actors practicing their songs. Spotify figured out I needed show tunes and gave me selections from ‘Hello, Dolly’, 'Oklahoma', classic Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and more.

Which meant that—of course—when I needed a song to convey a moment in the book, ‘Mack the Knife’ from The Threepenny Opera came on. I used it!

Hope you enjoy this week's selection.

  1. I'm also struggling to write at the minute, despite having a whole story in my head ready to go! I was delighted to read your post and watch the Threepenny Opera. I've not seen this before and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for posting.

    1. I've been struggling since May so I understand. I have plenty of stories floating around my head, but no current drive to write them. Hopefully soon. I'd not seen it either, but it was an entertaining watch. Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks for stopping by and good luck with your writing.
