IWSG - Book Release Blues

Happy Wednesday. Can you believe the first month of the year is already over? Time sure flies. But new month means new IWSG post.

January was a big-ish month for me because I had my first publisher release. My problem story, Anything Once is officially out in the world. It was a whirlwind day and really the week. Being an indie I was eager to see if the launch would be any better than those titles. It wasn’t too bad.

This was by far the best ranking I ever have achieved, even if it was only for like an hour. LOL I take what I can get.

But, the post release euphoria wears off. My rank is steadily going up as expected and the funk sets in. What’s next? I haven’t written anything in months. I *think* about writing, but actually sitting to do it, well my focus seems to still be on vacation.

With no new words, it means after my release next month I have zilch in the pipeline. In theory, I’m ahead of the game over other years with actually having two releases this year. But they are both at the beginning of the year which means if I can’t find my focus, I won’t have anything for the rest of the year.

The book release blues for me is not being able to spend enough time enjoying what I have accomplished because I know I have more to do. There is always something to do.  Because there is always something to do, it keeps my mind moving which doesn’t help my lack of focus.
Totally feel like I’m chasing my tail on this.

Trying to take it one day/thing at a time is one of those easier said than done situations. Head above water and try not to get lost in the overwhelm.

Hope your first month of 2019 went well. Have a great February.

Until next time
~Meka

  1. I feel like I could have written this post. Every time I accomplish something there's a momentary thrill and then...I need to start working again! The anxiety about it takes right back over. Hang in there, and congratulations on the release!

    1. Thanks Megan. Yeah the thrill is short lived for sure. And the anxiety and worry is so much harder to overcome. A giant, messy circle.

  2. I know the feeling! I've had nothing new for years. I've actually gotten used to it.
Glad your release got off to a good start. Keep priming the pump.

    1. I was that way before book 2. I had a 3 year gap between that book and my first one. It was this group that got me back on track. :) I am happy with how my release went. Now to gear up for another one.

  3. Have you thought of looking in the past? Is there a forgotten story that needs TLC? It could get the juices going. :-)

    1. I have a few that are started. Two novellas, and like 5 that would be full length. LOL I just need to sit and commit to one and get back in the game.

  4. Congrats on your new release. You've had the party, now it's time to clean up. Re-read those articles you had to set aside for later. Go through your files and look for partial stories. Take long walks (or drives) in silence and see what your Muse has to say. Good luck.

    1. Thank you! LOL that is a very good way to put it. I need to call my focus home and stop letting it wander on a daily basis. I have one story that is halfway completed. It's first on the list.

  5. You absolutely should be so proud of yourself! We go through phases as authors. We can't continually be producing new work in this modern age of publishing, because our focus intermittently has to be on the other parts of the job (like releasing new books and marketing them!) It takes a lot of steam to get these other parts of the job done, and then no wonder we're not feeling new words for a while.

  6. Congrats on your release, and I totally understand what you mean. Good luck on finding inspiration. Thank you for sharing!

  7. Congrats on the rankings! Work on the marketing and publishing stuff for a while -- you can get it all done and ready for release for the entire year -- then take a break before diving back into writing. Perhaps if the stress of the other parts of this job is out of the way, your muse will feel free to show up again :-)

  8. It wasn't bad? #8 and #9 are amazing ranks for a new release. First, congratulations on the release and making those ranks. Keep up marketing for the first three months after release to help it along. Second, way to go on two releases in one year. That's huge. I know that it's the trend for authors to do rapid releases and come out with a lot each year, but that's just unrealistic for many of us. Don't burn yourself out. Do what you can manage. Aim for another release for next year. I used to try to do one release a year in my series, but because of my burnout, I won't have one this year, and that's okay. I'll settle for next year. :) Good luck!
